Secondary breaking

Secondary, Slyping and boulder breaking with Royex

Royex is ideally suited to secondary blasting applications. Due to the low presence of fly rock, dust and noise, oversize boulders and rock can be broken whilst normal operations continue. In addition nearby equipment such as crushers, haulers and drilling equipment will not need to be moved from the operating site.

Secondary operations underground is normally problematic, especially for mining operations in block cave mines and similar. Oversize or slype blasting must happen on shift and be part of ventilation time frames. Oversize blocking draw bells or passages cases significant delays and poses risks to underground personnel.

Using Royex to break such boulders are an ideal solution as the Royex system minimizes toxic gases such as NOx and CO. Royex is today frequently used in underground mining applications for just this purpose.  Basically, Royex breaks rocks that causes blockage or other problems in operations on shift without the extensive need for ventilation clearance.

In underground operations where slyping is normally required in the infrastructure maintenance work, Royex is an ideal solution as these tunnel expansion or similar blasting can happen with minimal risk.

Royex integrates smoothly into any centralized blasting system and can be use in any hole direction with our without water content.

The videos to the right shows some examples of overhang and secondary breaking in a quarry application.

Underwater blasting

Underwater blasting with Royex

The Royex system is an revolutionary approach to under water rock breaking and blasting applications. The reason for this is that the Royex cartridge removes rock as effectively as conventional explosives, but, in contrast to detonating explosives Royex saves marine life.

Fish and water mammals such as dolphins and manatees are sensitive to pressure changes in water. They contain pockets of air which service them as buoyancy control organs. When using detonating explosives in water, massive pressure waves travels very long distances and the pressure differential crushes these air pockets, instantly killing the animal over large areas.

As the deflagration process eliminates the peak pressure behavior, the Royex system can effectively break rock underwater without destroying marine life (fish and other marine lifeforms).

The majority of our worlds population lives near water. Or, is dependent on a harbor or other water infrastructure. To ensure safe development of underwater structures without killing marine life, Royex would be the evident go to solution. Royex works down to depths up to 30 meters.

Cartridges

ROYEX CARtridges

The Royex cartridge is a non-detonating rock breaking cartridge. It is classified as a pyrotechnic article and holds a 1.4S transport classification. In the European Union, the cartridge is classified as a P2 product, under the European directive for pyrotechnical articles, by the BAM laboratory in Berlin, Germany.

The cartridge consists of a plastic housing containing a pyrotechnic propellant mixture. The robust plastic housing is designed to protect the propellant mixture and the igniter during handling and charging. Royex cartridges are currently offered in three diameters: 22, 32 and 38 mm in lengths from 70 mm to 1100 mm.

The 22 mm cartridge has been specially designed for very precise pre-splits where fracture zones must be eliminated and wall integrity is paramount. Typical applications are dimensional stone breaking in slate, limestone, granite, marble and similar rock types. or for tunnel perimeter blasting.  The 22 mm cartridges are also ideal for concrete demolition or in areas where only small diameter drilling equipment is available.

Royex 32 mm cartridges are the product of choice for highly sensitive civil projects. Containing enough breaking power to be cost efficient, the 32 mm cartridge maintains an excellent vibration control and fly rock minimization. Typical applications include precision civil projects such as bench blasting in urban environments or indoors. Trenching, wells or tunnel development applications are also situations where the 32 mm cartridges has multiple uses.

A Royex 38 mm cartridge is ideal for tunnel development or surface developments where larger burdens and hole depths can be allowed. It is also suitable for bigger operations where small hole drilling capabilities are scares or unavailable.

Maxfire igniters

MAXFIRE IGNITERS

Initiation heat and pressure is essential for the performance of non-detonating cartridges. The Maxfire initiation capability is the most powerful available on the global market today and this feature enhances the reliability and efficiency of the Royex cartridge making the Royex system cartridge the most powerful deflagrating cartridge available worldwide.

Maxfire igniters are connected and fixed into the Royex cartridge using a wingnut screw fitting that smoothly connects with the Royex igniter plug. The connection is secure and waterproof, ensuring that the igniter is firmly connected into the cartridge and in place during the loading and stemming operation.

Royex initiation machine Bart 1

Royex Initiation machine BART 1

BART-1 is a medium energy hand cranked blasting machine that comes with a built-in line continuity tester. It uses a hand generator and the operator does not need an external power supply or batteries. The blasting machine is portable, compact and lightweight, and can easily be operated by a single person.

The integrated line tester verifies the line’s integrity and uses a two color LED that indicates to the user whether the resistance of the line and igniters/detonators is below or above 700 Ω.  For safety reasons, the line tester current is limited to 1 mA.

BART-1 includes an output pulse tail cutting to limit the impulse to 4ms and quench the remaining capacitor charge. These safety features are necessary to eliminate potential secondary explosions of the flammable dust generated during the blast.

The device comes in an aluminum enclosure that includes ON–OFF/L-test switch, terminal for connection of electric igniter/detonator lines, two color LED for line testing and a crank handle for capacitor charging. Both sides of the panel include “READY” LEDs to indicate the capacitor charge state.

Royex Initiation machine BART 2

BART-2 is a powerful high energy hand cranked blasting machine. The device uses a hand generator and the operator does not need an external power supply or batteries. The blasting machine is portable, compact and lightweight, and can easily be operated by a single person.

BART-2 can be used to initiate up to 80 Maxfire igntiers or detonate most insensitive electric detonators that require high energy to detonate, including class C4 highly insensitive detonators.

BART-2 includes an output pulse tail cutting to limit the impulse to 4ms and quench the remaining capacitor charge. These safety features are necessary to eliminate potential secondary explosions of the flammable dust generated during the blast.

The blasting machine includes a number of important safety features to avoid accidental initiation. The crank handle can be removed by the operator when the firing line and the igniters/detonators are inspected or not ready to be fired yet. BART-2AS also includes a mechanical safety cover above the terminals that prevent cranking when the line is connected. Lastly, there are two FIRE buttons that need to be pushed simultaneously for initiation.

The device comes in an aluminum enclosure that includes ON-OFF/L-test switch, terminals for connecting electric firing line, and a crank handle for capacitor charging. Both sides of the panel include “READY” LEDs to indicate the capacitor charge state.
